KEFALONIA WORTH SEEING ACQUI DIVISION WAR MEMORIAL ARGOSTOLI

ACQUI DIVISION WAR MEMORIAL ARGOSTOLI
THE ITALIAN OCCUPATION World War II began in September 1939 and in June 1940 fascist Italy entered the war on the side of nazi Germany. On October 28, 1940 Italy attacked Greece from her bases in Albania. The Greek Army repulsed decisively the italian invaders. On April 6,1941 nazi Germany came to the rescue of her hard pressed Italian ally and attacked Greece from her bases in Bulgaria. As a result,a few weeks later, the Greek front collapsed and the Italian forces entered in Greece. On April 30,1941 Italian troops of the Acqui Division landed in Kefalonia. Under the command of the Division were also units of Coast Guard, Customs and Police officers making a total of approximately 12.000 men. The Ionian islands, of which Kefalonia is the largest, became an italian protectorate, or more precisely. Territories annexed to Italy and subordinate to Italian civil Authority. On July 25, 1943 the fascist regime in Italy fell and two weeks later, on August 7, German troops landed in Kefalonia and established their base in Lixouri. Their objective was to prevent the possibility of the Acqui Division joining the Anglo-American Allies.
