"Above average" may be stretching it a bit. Karavomilos is a fairly ordinary strip development up the coast from Sami and is very well positioned for the traveller with a hire car who wants to see Kefalonia. Sami, the biggest town on this side of the island, is close (supermarkets, restaurants, ferries, boast trips etc). The beaches aren't attractive or large. However, the filling station was cheapest in the area for unleaded (May 2006) and there is an excellent restaurant, the Cockerel, in the square at the side of the mini-market. The one interesting thing to see in the village itself is the Lake (quite small), which is the outlet of the water from the Melisani cave and which contains a water wheel. Do be sure to visit the Cave, just outside the village to the north- it is stunning. Further to the north, on the road to Agia Efimia, is Saint Friday Restaurant, which is is excellent. To stay in Karavomilos itself, I recommend Athina Beach Hotel.
