The island is very mountainous, with its highest peak, Mount Ainos, reaching 1,628 m (5,100 ft), and is covered by a rare black pine forest of Abies Cephalonica. The denseness of the forest caused the Venetians to call the mountain Monte Nero black mountain. The ground formation consists largely of limestone rock.
